The R- Word(Retarded)

We've all said it at least once in once in our lives, but do we ever pause and ask ourselves what it really means to say retarded? The definition of retarded is "slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness, emotional development, academic progress, etc." When you say that word, you are putting down a mentally handicap person who was born with a special condition that they can't do any thing about. If someone were to hear you say that and if they had a special condition, think about how you make them feel. Remember THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK PLEASE!!

Cyberbullying

"Everybody in O'Fallon knows who you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. The world would be a better place without you," messaged from Josh Evans to Megan Meier. 20 minutes after receiving this terrible message, Megan Meier had hung herself. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead the following day. Six weeks after Megan's death,  her parents were informed that the mother of one of Megan's friends, with whom Megan had a falling out, had created the "Josh Evans" account. The parent, Lori Drew, who created the fake account, admitted that she and her daughter had the password to the account. After the incident was finally reported to the media a year later, the world had found out Lori's Drew 18-year-old  temporary employee, Ashley Grills, had written most of the messages addressed to Megan. Sadly, Lori Drew and Ashley Grill were not convicted for long and their conviction was appealed in 2009.

Megan Meier is just another victim of cyberbullying. She was not the only one who committed suicide because of bullying. There were and are many victims. To keep cyberbullying from becoming a growing epidemic, reach out to friends and be careful what you say on the internet.

Hate Crimes

Hate crimes are criminal acts of verbal or physical abuse because of someone's racial group, religion, sexual orientation, disability, class, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, social status or political affiliation. Recently, two men from Pennsylvania were sentenced to 9 years in prison for physically assaulting an man because he was an undocumented Mexican immigrant. This is considered a hate crime. During the federal trial, witnesses testified that racist language was used before and during the attack and that Ramirez was kicked in the head repeatedly after he fell down. The defendants, they said, didn't want immigrants in their neighborhood and repeatedly ordered Ramirez to leave.Three former Pennsylvania police officers were also charged, accused of trying to cover up the incident.Beating someone up is bad on it's own, but beating someone up because of something they can't control is much worse.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela ( born 18 July 1918)served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994. As president from 1994 to 1999, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation.

In South Africa, Mandela is often known as uTata Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan.

Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.

Distress in Egypt

What's going on in Egypt?: Protests started on Tuesday, January 25, when -- inspired by the successful revolution in Tunisia -- thousands began taking to the streets to protest poverty, rampant unemployment, government corruption and autocratic governance of President Hosni Mubarak, who has ruled the country for 30 years. These were the first protests on such a large scale in Egypt since the 1970s. To read more, go here.

Racial Justice

"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Thomas Jefferson wrote these powerful words encouraging our founding fathers and the rest of the country to strive for a free and equal nation. Here and now in the 21st century, this goal has still not been fully achieved. Through the years, several generations of civil rights leaders have attempted to attain a grasp on justice for all races. But yet, this is not the reality. We have tried through the years and still encounter discrimination. Will we ever escape this tragedy?
